How Deep Do Screw Piles Go in Alberta?
It is the first question almost everyone asks, and the honest answer is not a number. A screw pile is deep enough when it reaches soil that can carry the load — and the way we know it has is torque, not depth.
That surprises people, so it is worth explaining properly.
Frost is the floor, not the target
In the Calgary area, frost penetrates roughly 1.2 to 1.8 metres in a typical winter. Any foundation bearing above that depth is sitting in ground that expands when it freezes and settles when it thaws. That cycle is what lifts deck posts, cracks garage slabs and racks door frames out of square.
So getting below frost is the minimum. It is not the goal.
Competent strata is the target
Below the frost zone, the ground in and around Calgary varies a great deal. The north and east are dominated by glaciolacustrine clay with high shrink-swell potential. The inner city carries decades of variable fill. Travel west toward Cochrane and you hit dense glacial till, cobbles and shallow bedrock. Head south and you find river-valley alluvium and silt.
Two houses a few kilometres apart can need noticeably different pile depths for the same deck. That is normal, and it is why a fixed depth specification is a poor substitute for measurement.
Torque is how capacity is verified
As a helical pile is advanced, the resistance it meets is measured as installation torque. Torque correlates to bearing capacity — so when the pile reaches the torque value the engineering calls for, it has reached soil capable of carrying the designed load.
That is the moment it is deep enough.
In practice this means two piles on the same site can finish at different depths and both be correct. One found competent ground sooner. The other had to go further. Both carry the load they were designed to carry, and both have a torque record proving it.
What you should receive
For any engineered pile installation, ask for:
- The torque log — the recorded installation torque for each pile
- Verified capacity — what that torque corresponds to in bearing and uplift
- Stamped drawings where the permit requires them
- An as-built showing final pile locations and depths
A pile with no torque record is just a post in the ground. The documentation is the difference between a foundation and an assumption.
The short version
Below frost is the minimum. Competent soil is the target. Torque is the proof. If someone quotes you a fixed depth for every pile on a site without measuring, ask them how they will verify capacity — and see what they say.
