Screw Piles vs Concrete: An Honest Cost Comparison
Almost every page you will find comparing these two is published by someone who sells one of them. This one is too — we install screw piles. So here is the comparison with the part most vendors leave out: the cases where concrete is the better answer.
Are screw piles cheaper than concrete?
On raw materials, usually no. A bag of concrete and a cardboard tube cost less than a galvanized steel shaft with a helix welded to it.
That is also not the number you actually pay.
A poured pile needs a hole. The hole needs a machine or a lot of labour, and it produces spoil that has to go somewhere. It needs forms. Then it needs to cure before anything can sit on it — typically several days, longer when it is cold. If your framers are booked for Thursday and the pour happened Tuesday, that is a problem you are paying for somewhere.
Screw piles arrive as steel, go in with a machine, and carry load the same day. No hole, no spoil pile, no curing.
Once labour, machine time, disposal and schedule are in the comparison, the two usually land close together on small-to-medium residential work — and screw piles often come out ahead on anything where access is awkward or the calendar is tight.
Where concrete genuinely wins
Three cases, honestly:
Very large pile counts on open sites. If you are putting in dozens of piles on a wide, flat lot with easy access for a concrete truck, the per-unit economics start favouring concrete.
Shallow bedrock. If competent rock is close to the surface, a screw pile has nowhere useful to go. Sometimes the answer is a different foundation entirely.
Where a continuous footing is the right structural answer. Piles carry point loads. Some structures want a continuous bearing surface, and forcing piles into that job is the wrong solution dressed up as the modern one.
Where screw piles win
Tight access. A fenced backyard, an inner-city infill lot, a deck going in beside a house that is already there. Compact equipment gets in where a concrete truck and an excavator cannot.
Winter. Frozen ground stops concrete work and does not stop pile installation. In Calgary that is a meaningful stretch of the year.
Schedule. Build the same day. On a deck or a garage, removing several days of curing from the middle of the build is often worth more than the material difference.
Verified capacity. This is the one people underrate. As a helical pile is driven, installation torque is measured, and torque correlates to bearing capacity. You finish with a number proving each pile carries what it was designed to carry. A poured pile is inspected before the pour and then buried — you are trusting the process, not measuring the result.
Frost heave on reactive clay. Calgary’s clay expands and contracts with moisture. A pile anchored below the active zone is not along for that ride.
What about the disadvantages?
Screw piles are not free of them, and a comparison that pretends otherwise is not worth reading. Rocky ground and shallow bedrock can stop a pile short. They need proper engineering to be worth anything. And on very large open-site pile counts the cost advantage narrows or disappears.

How to compare two quotes properly
If you have one of each in front of you, check that both include:
- Excavation and spoil removal, where applicable
- Engineering and stamped drawings, if your permit requires them
- The schedule impact — days of curing are a real cost
- Verification — what proof do you get that the foundation carries the load?
A concrete quote that leaves out disposal and a pile quote that leaves out engineering are not comparable numbers, however similar the totals look.
