The ground under Cochrane

The town sits at the base of Big Hill in the Bow valley, and as the ground rises west toward the foothills the soft lacustrine clay gives way to dense glacial till packed with cobbles and gravel, with bedrock progressively closer to surface. That is good news structurally — strong ground with real capacity. It is simply harder to get a pile into.

The difficulty is the practical story here. Dense till takes higher installation torque and often a heavier shaft than the same load would need in Calgary, and it carries a genuine risk of refusal: the pile meets a cobble or boulder it cannot pass, short of design depth.
