The ground under Calgary
There is no single Calgary soil profile, and quoting the city as though there were is the commonest mistake we see. The north and east sit on glaciolacustrine clay with high shrink-swell potential — the ground that lifts one corner of a deck over a wet spring and drops it again by August. Along the Bow and the Elbow you get river-terrace gravels, silts and sands instead, where depth to competent bearing can change across a single back yard.
The valley communities carry perched water as well, sitting above the regional groundwater level. That makes excavating and forming a footing miserable. It affects a screw pile far less, which is much of why piles get specified along those terraces at all.
In the inner city the ground is barely geology any more. A lot in Killarney, Renfrew or Mount Pleasant may have been built on, demolished and rebuilt more than once, and the back yard can hide demolition rubble, coal ash, a filled-in cistern or the footings of a house that came down forty years ago. None of that shows from the surface. It is why we accept a pile on measured torque rather than a specified depth — two piles three metres apart here can finish at genuinely different depths and both be correct.
What gets built here
Most of our Calgary work is second-generation building on established lots: garden suites and laneway builds, rear additions, detached garages on pile-supported grade beams, deck rebuilds. The constraint is almost never the ground. It is access. A 7.5-metre inner-city lot with a house on one side, a fence on the other and a rear lane as the only way in will not take a concrete truck or a full-size excavator, and mature boulevard trees rule out widening the approach.
Helical equipment comes down the lane, spoil is essentially nil, there is no forming and no cure window, and the neighbours get their street back the same day. On the newer suburban edge the job changes again: open access, uniform clay, and ordinary deck, hot tub and garage loads on ground that moves seasonally.
